5 Reasons to Stop No-Sleep Bragging

Sick of listening to your co-worker brag about how he stayed up late watching the latest HBO series? This same person is likely to yawn excessively during company meetings, complain about being exhausted and confess how desperately caffeine will help make it through the afternoon.

The little choices you make each day can affect your sleep health and your overall lifestyle. So, Mattress Firm is debunking that common misconception that going with little to no sleep is “cool” with five reasons you should stop that “No-Sleep Bragging.”

1. Slacking at work will not pay off.

Little by little, mistakes and typos on important presentations will start to pop up with lack of sleep. Have you ever been staring at the same document for hours trying to make progress, but your mind is blurry?

Being efficient and productive in your job goes hand-in-hand with good rest the night before. Studies have shown there is a better work attendance for those who practice healthy sleep – that’s getting 7-9 hours of sleep each night.

2. Your home is in messy chaos.

Do you find yourself frustrated over little annoyances that didn’t bother you before? Such as the kids asking you to wrestle when you walk in the door or your wife calling to see if you can pick up milk on the way home?

Not getting enough sleep can really affect your mood and how you treat others around you. The lack-of-sleep bragging rights aren’t worth sacrificing the relationships that are most important to you.

It may also be harder to keep up with the chores and responsibilities around the house if all you want to do is lounge on the couch in the evening.

3. Doctor visits are becoming more frequent.

When co-pays and prescriptions are breaking your budget, you may want to skip those late-nights out with friends.

The Mayo Clinic tells us your body needs sleep to fight infectious diseases. Neglecting the time you lay in bed can greatly impact the chance of getting sick because those very important infection-fighting antibodies and cells are reduced when you don’t get enough sleep.

4. Wasting money away at the coffee shop.

Feel like you’ve been going through a sleep-slump? Before you indulge in that next cup from the local shop, take a look at your credit card statement and you’re likely to see way too many charges from that shop. Relying on caffeine to get you through the day doesn’t give you the boost that your body needs, and can really add up financially over-time.

“If you drink to stave off the effects of a poor night’s rest with lots of caffeine spread throughout the day, you are doomed to have a poor night of sleep again, followed by a similar feeling of fatigue the next day. This can be a difficult cycle to break,” said Dr. Sujay Kansagra, director of Duke University’s Pediatric Neurology Sleep Medicine Program.

5. It’s preventing you from achieving your exercise goals.

Prioritizing physical fitness is essential to improving your overall health and wellness.

Our recent Mattress Firm study tells us that those who sleep the recommended 7-9 hours each night are more likely to exercise multiple times in a week than those who don’t get enough sleep.

Don’t let your #NoYawnNewYear goals fizzle only for a few bragging rights in the break room.
