Headboards: Do You Really Need One?

People typically think of headboards as a bedroom essential. Whether you prefer wooden, upholstered or a crafty inspiration from Pinterest, headboards are an easy way to customize your bedroom. But we got to thinking, is there a functional purpose for headboards or are they just for aesthetics? Do you really need a headboard?

History of Headboards

We did some digging and back in the day, headboards were used as a barrier between the wall and the edge of the bed, keeping heads from getting too cold during the night. Houses weren’t insulated as well as they are today and the walls could get really cold, resulting in a very cold bedroom. Simply put, headboards would shield the cold.

So why is there still such an implied necessity for headboards since houses have better insulation now?

Why Do You Need a Headboard Today?

One way of looking at it is that headboards can be considered a space filler not only on a big, open wall, but also between the wall and the bed, keeping pillows from falling off the bed during the night. Nothing is more frustrating than waking up with no pillows because they’ve fallen off the bed.

Most of what we discovered is that headboards really are simply meant to be fun to look at and aesthetically pleasing. A stylish headboard can make an entire bedroom seem cozier and more comfortable than just a bare wall. Cozy bedrooms naturally make it easier to get comfortable and fall into deep, quality sleep.

Sure, there may not be an actual functional purpose requiring headboards to be in every bedroom. But if having one could make you more comfortable and improve your sleep quality, the Mattress Firm team most definitely recommends them. As you know, for us, it’s all about the quality sleep!

  1. Headboards serve other purposes, i.e., providing something to grab when rising and going to bed. Many have built-in spaces for books, phones, emergency medications, lighting, alarm clocks, etc. to be stored and easily reached in the dark.

  2. We almost did away with our wood bed frame with attached headboard, to a basic bed frame (headboardless) But we decided not to. Reason: We both sit up in bed at night reading, watch tv etc. Using our headboard as back support. Without it, our bed would constantly separate itself from the wall, being that we’re on tile footing. We couldn’t have it any other way…
